Hey everyone! Sorry for being a little MIA. I’ve spent the past two weeks getting ready for my trip abroad. I arrived in Italy about a week and a half ago and it has been a very long week with orientations day in and day out. I think I’ve finally got myself aquainted to my new home and I’m ready to get back on track with A La Keighla! So since I just left the country on a pretty long flight, I thought I’d share with you some of the things that I stored in my carry on that came in handy.
Packing your carry-on for a long-haul flight is almost like packing your suitcase – you don’t want to overload it, but you want to be prepared. Staying comfortable, entertained, and prepared with the necessities are the main goal. This is exactly what I put in my carry on for my 6+ hour flight last week, so I can guarantee you that it all fits into one bag! You’ll even have some extra space for your non-essentials.
Even though I recommend to always travel with “real” shoes, if you don’t, socks are a must. We all know airplanes are cold, and especially on long flights, you’ll want to keep your feet warm. A nice pair of compression socks like these will also help reduce swelling that happens on long flights.
Again with the cold airplanes, a nice big scarf will keep you warm and can double as a blanket or pillow.
Laptop with movies
I always bring my laptop on plane rides for entertainment. Instead of bringing a few DVDs with you, load some onto your computer to save precious space in your carry-on.
If you’re not lucky enough to be on one of those fancy new planes with USB ports or power outlets, a portable charger is a must. You don’t want to end up with a dead phone at the end of your flight!
Because airplane food is gross and you’ll definitely need some food. I recommend a sweet snack, a salty snack, and something of substance that could pass as a meal or fill your up more, like a bagel or croissant. We want to cover all the bases here because no one wants to be hungry on a red-eye.
- hair ties
- travel perfume
- face wipes
- lip balm
You’ll need them eventually, whether its for music or movies or just to drown out some of the ambient noise.
I like to bring my own empty water bottle to the airport so that when I get through security, I can fill it up at a water fountain. No more paying for over-priced water!
Gum can serve many purposes on your next flight. It can help calm nerves and anxiety, can suppress appetite, and helps ear pressure during takeoff and landing.
Notebook/ Planner + Pen
I always keep a notebook and my planner on me in case I need to write anything down or schedule. And also because you never know when a brilliant idea will strike!
This one is pretty self-explanatory, but it also smells good and keeps you germ-free.
My hair can get pretty tangled on the plane, so I always carry a hairbrush with me.
Spare Change of Clothes
This one can get annoying if it takes up too much space in your carry-on, but it’s essential in case your luggage gets lost. Try to bring just an extra pair of leggings, underwear, and a t-shirt. If you can fit it into a ziploc baggie, then you should be good to go!
- Eye Drops
- Hand Sanitizer
- Sleep Aid
- Prescription meds
I bring my glasses for flights in case I need them when I wake up or if they dim the cabin lights.
Where are you going on your next long-haul flight? Leave a comment and let me know!
