Hey all! Today I’m going to be sharing with you my tips for keeping your hair long & strong this summer. Fo me, summer is the season where my hair suffers most due to pool days and extreme heat. As a summer camp counselor, I’m swimming every day and it really takes a toll on my hair. These things really can damage your hair so it’s important to especially take care of it in these hot months! Here are a few tips I use for taking care of my hair when it needs it most!
Getting regular trims is really important no matter what season it is, but I usually find I need them most in the summertime. Like I said, I’m swimming and in the sun all day every day at work, which really damages my hair. Trimming the ends once or twice the summer gets rid of breakage, and makes my hair much healthier!
One of my favorite ways to treat my hair in the summer is with a deep conditioner. When I don’t necessarily have the time or money to get a trim, I use a deep conditioner to keep it shiny and healthy for as long as possible. I absolutely love these Hask hair masks because they’re seriously super cheap ($2 each!!!) and they make my hair feel AMAZING afterwards. There are so many different kinds too, from argan oil to keratin protein, there is definitely one you’ll love. They come in single-use packages, but I get two to three uses out of one packet easily! I have pretty long hair so I’m sure you can too! That makes the cost per use less than a dollar, which is seriously a steal.
I stopped washing my hair every day about a year ago and it not only saves you money on shampoo, but really helps your hair retain moisture and stay shiny! The natural oils in your hair are important for it to stay pretty and strong, so washing your hair every day strips those oils out of your hair. At first, especially if you have an oily scalp, it will be difficult to go longer than one or two days of no washing because of greasy hair. But I can assure you that you can build your hair up to going 3, 4, 5, or even 6 days without washing. Just start with a few days of no washing and work your way up from there! I love this trick too because it also allows my hair to stay styled for more than one day. So not only can you skip the wash, but also the hot tools! You can also check out these second day hairstyles that are prefect for a day without a wash!
Note: If your hair comes in contact with chlorine from the pool, always make sure to at least rinse your hair afterwards. Chlorine is not good for your hair and you definitely don’t want it sitting there until your next shampoo!
Speaking of hot tools, those really damage your hair too. It’s super important to limit the use of blowdryers and irons as much as possible for healthy hair. But I know I can’t go without doing my hair every now and then when I’m going to dinner or an event. So, a great way to protect your hair from the damaging heat of your flat iron is with a heat protecting spray. This will give you a little bit of a shield between your actual hair and the flat iron/curling wand/etc. We want to be pretty without all the damage! Try this one from Not Your Mother’s, which not only provides protection from the heat, but also speeds up blow drying time!
And of course the best way to protect your hair is to skip the hot tools all together and go all natural. As I said, I work at a summer camp, so I definitely don’t style my hair with hot tools in the morning before work. Instead, I let it air dry, and do a simple style to keep it out of my face and keep it safe from further damage. Any kind of braid, bun, or ponytail is what I usually go for.
